GROWING IN FAITH SMALL GROUPS FOR ADULTS Click here for information about our current small group opportunities and to sign up for a group Small Groups at First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18 Do you wish you had a place to talk openly about your faith? to share your questions in a safe environment? to seek God’s will for your life? to give and receive Christian love and nurture? to study and pray and serve together? to grow deeper in your discipleship? Small Groups have been important means to discipleship for almost 2000 years. Jesus began the great tradition of small groups when he called 12 ordinary men to meet together, to receive the power of the Holy Spirit, to grow deeper in their faith, and then to change the world. John Wesley, the founder of United Methodism, renewed this tradition through the establishment of Holy Clubs which met regularly to pray, study the Bible, listen to the Holy Spirit, care for each other, and serve the community. Members of those small groups began a new denomination—-Methodism. At First United Methodist Church, we have no smaller expectations than to change our world. We believe that God can do amazing work through committed people who meet together in small groups to pray, study, listen, care, and serve. This brochure contains some of the options provided by your church to connect you to this life-changing tradition. We believe that committed believers meeting together in small groups and seeking God’s will for their lives can change our community, our state, and beyond for Jesus. At First United Methodist Church, you have several ways to connect with a small group of Christian friends and grow deeper in your faith. Read below to learn about these options. THE DISCIPLESHIP DIAMOND: God wants you to take your next step spiritually. That could mean getting baptized, committing to take time to dig into the Bible on a daily basis, or maybe God wants you to see what His Word has to say about your life purpose. The Discipleship Diamond is all about those next steps. Imagine a baseball diamond. At first base, our membership class, you’ll learn what it means to be a Christian and United Methodist here at our church. Then head to second base, where you’ll find the tools to develop a closer relationship with God--tools like prayer, Bible study, stewardship, and Christian fellowship. Then third base, you’ll begin to learn about your God-given strengths and ways that you can use them in service to God. As you head for home plate, we'll help you discover your life’s mission of sharing God with the world. Click here to learn more about The Discipleship Diamond. GROWING DEEPER GROUPS: These groups focus on a specific topic of study, last from four to thirty-four weeks and offer times of discussion and discernment. Some of these groups require a significant amount of pre-session preparation and reading. If you are wanting to broaden your understanding of The Bible or another specific component of Christian living, GROWING DEEPER GROUPS are for you. In these groups, look for both information and transformation. Click here to learn more about specific GROWING DEEPER GROUPS currently open for registration. GROWING TOGETHER GROUPS: These groups of people are ongoing, long-term relationship groups. If you are seeking to fan the flame of the Holy Spirit within you, if you have been longing to grow deeper in your faith “together in community with others like you,” then these groups are for you. This fall, new groups will design their own plan of study, prayer, care, and service. These plans will be as unique and diverse as the group members choose.
