OLDER ADULT MINISTRIES

MERRY METHODISTS welcome anyone 50 and above, male or female, married or not, member, prospect or friend, who enjoys fellowship, fun, travel, support.

Communion at Area Retirement Centers
Pine Valley – 2nd Tuesdays at 2:45 p.m.
Merrill Gardens –4th Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m.: not on March 23
 
 
Sunday School Classes
There are a number of classes with various lesson formats and differing group sizes.

Group Exercise Classes
Senior Fitness Classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8-8:45 a.m. in the Church Activity Center. More details in the Recreation Ministry page.
 
Mission Emphasis
The Merry Methodists are collecting travel size toiletries, wash clothes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, pens, pencils, colors & books to be bagged and delivered to Turning Point in Tuscaloosa. Items may be brought to Ethelyn’s office.
 
Monthly Luncheons
Our luncheons are usually on the 4th Wednesday of the month at noon in Chitwood Hall. Occasionally these are covered dish lunches. Sometimes we have short programs.
June 30 Dr. Ken Dunivant will lead a session on "Planning a Funeral" for those who would like to discuss this important service. There is great comfort in knowing that you have helped your family with one of the most difficult things they will ever do. A few minutes of recording your wishes will offer peace of mind.
July 28 Collette Vacations will do a presentation on the Canadian Rockies. Some of you may be interested in the Canadian Rockies by Train adventure planned for May 12-20, 2011 while others may be interested in the pictures of a beautiful area of the world.
August 25 lunch without a program

Day Trips
Merry Methodists take day trips periodically to Birmingham Broadway Series, area attractions, pilgrimages, other events and programs. We recently took  trips to Gee's Bend and Camden in the Black Belt and to the Rural Studio of Auburn University Architecture School. To sign up on line, click here.
 
Overnight Trips
Merry Methodists take short overnight trips a couple of times a year. Previous trips to Callaway Gardens, Nashville, Mobile, Chattanooga, and Atlanta.
 
Extended Trips
Merry Methodists take one or two 4-7 day trips a year. Our annual holiday trip for 2010 will be during the week of November 29-December 3, possibly for a night or two in Huntsville with theGalaxy of Lights at the Botanical Gardens, Burritt Holiday Mansion, Harrison Brother's Hardware and the Veteran's Memorial Museum with Heritage Military Vehicles.
 
  
Upcoming trips:
November 4-13 -   
Dr. Charles Page is making one last trip to Israel before he retires from international travel. He will be going November 4-13, 2010. Over the years, Ken Dunivant has had the pleasure of traveling and studying with Charles and he wants to share this last adventure with him. The trip will explore the impact of the land on the life and ministry of Jesus. Charles and Ken will be offering insights and perspectives on the Biblical stories with on-sight lectures. Traveling with Charles Page is an unforgettable experience.
 
Some of the places to visit are: Caesarea, Mt. Carmel, Megiddo, Nazareth, Sea of Galilee, Bethsaida, Capernaum, top of the Mount of Beatitudes, Jordan River, Jericho, Bethlehem for a visit of the Church of the Nativity, Shepherd’s Fields, The Herodion, the Dead Sea, Masada, Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane, Mount Moriah and the Dome of the Rock.
 
Details are finalized with the cost less than $3900.00 which includes the insurance ($156), tips ($75), add-on air to departing city of New York (around $400), and airport taxes and fuel surcharge ($440 which is subject to change). Full breakfast and dinner daily are included. Brochures with full details are available. A 5 day/4 night extension to Egypt is being finalized.
 
 
May 12-20, 2011 Canadian Rockies by Train
Plan ahead for May 2011 for a wonderful trip to the Canadian Rockies. Collette Vacations will transport us from Tuscaloosa to the Birmingham Airport where we fly to Vancouver, British Columbia. Spend the night and next day in Vancouver before boarding VIA Rail’s The Canadian to begin your journey to the majestic Canadian Rockies. Sleep that night in your private room with private bath. Enjoy the day from your private cabin or one of the domed cars to get  360-degree views of the glistening glaciers of the Albreda Icefields and the wildlife on your way to Jasper, Alberta.

 

Motorcoach with overnights in Jasper (2), Lake Louise (1), Banff (2) and Calgary (1). Visit Maligne Canyon, one of Jasper’s most spectacular landmarks. Journey along the Icefields Parkway with waterfalls, rushing rivers, glacial peaks, imposing cliffs and snowcapped peaks with a stop at the Athabasca Falls. En route to Banff, view the spectacular Moraine lake and Valley of the Ten Peaks and much more.

Fantastic accommodations! 13 Meals: 7 breakfasts; 1 lunch; 5 dinners! Cost of $3399 includes air taxes, fees/surcharges, hotel transfers, round trip transportation from Tuscaloosa. Cancellation waiver & insurance ($235) & optional activities are not included in above cost. The sooner the deposits are in, the better the flight arrangements, but the deadline is 12/12/2010 for $250/person deposit. Final payment is due 3/13/2011.
